Frequently Asked Questions

All our vans are fully equipped – no hidden extra charges

Can I go wild camping in a campervan in Scotland? What’s included in your campervan hire? How many do your campervans sleep? Everything that we get asked about hiring a campervan in Scotland in one handy place.

The Basics

Our VWs sleep up to 4 (but four larger adults might find it a bit of a squeeze).

Some of our VWs can sit 5 people and it is possible to hire one of these vans for your family of 5 and to take a tent and sleeping bag with you.

Things to consider when there are 4/5 people travelling in a campervan:  Bring as little luggage as possible as space will be tight. We include bedding and towels with our hires and for each bed there is a double duvet and 2 pillows.

Everything you need for a fantastic campervaning experience.

The VW Campervans are equipped with 4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 mugs, 4 glasses.  Cutlery for 4 people including sharp knives, cooking utensils, bottle opener, corkscrew and tin opener.  The campervan is supplied with a bottle of gas and a full water tank.

We also include a coffee press, large bowl, colander, 3 saucepans, kettle, cleaner, cloth, scouring sponge, washing up bowl and liquid and a dustpan and brush.

Also included are two camping chairs (let us know if you need more), a camping table, a solar shower, a wee shovel (if you far from amenities), an electric hook up cable, a water carrier and hose, blinds for the front windows, an outdoor gas hob (let us know if you would like this) and an AA accident kit.

We also supply bedding at no extra charge.  A bedding set is a double duvet and cover, 2 pillows and covers and a double sheet (please let us know if you need 2 sets of bedding).  We also supply a set of towels which includes 2 bath towels, hand towels and a tea towel (let us know if you require extra towels).

Please also let us know if you require a bike rack as not all vans are able to hold one.

All vehicles are hired with a full tank of fuel and should be returned with a full tank of fuel.

Yes. We welcome dogs, one per campervan. But we also have to make sure that our non-doggy customers have a nice, clean van to hire so we ask that you keep the dogs off the upholstery and return the van without any reminders that your dog has been there that couldn’t be dealt with in a normal clean between hires.  Please see our dog policy. Some of our vans are kept dog free for customers who have allergies.

All our campers are thoroughly cleaned between hires but some of our vans are kept dog-free so that customers with allergies don’t need to worry. Please make us aware if you have an allergy when booking and we can ensure you have a dog-free van.

There is a small Sainsburys and a Tesco near us, an Asda just up the motorway one stop and just as you exit Perth on A9 there are lots of supermarkets. However, we do encourage our customers to save their storage space and support local businesses and shops wherever possible and there is some wonderful local produce available. Scotland is very good at catering for vegetarians and vegans but, if you are a vegetarian or vegan or have a special dietary need, we’d recommend that you stock up before leaving.

Yes, fully comprehensive insurance is included in the price for one driver provided they meet the driving licence criteria. Extra drivers are £10.00 each per day. Please note that insurance is subject to confirmation of ID and security deposit.

No, our campervans do not have toilets but there are plenty of toilet facilities at campsites and on tourist routes. We can supply a portable toilet for a modest additional charge of £45.

As little or as much as you want.

From your first point of contact to the time you return the van Big Sky Campers will be on hand to answer questions and help you get the most out of your campervan and your trip.  When you collect the van we will go over all the nitty gritty like how to pop the roof, make the bed(s), run the heater, add water and more.  If you forget anything when you are on the road you are welcome to call and we will help.

Wild camping is known as informal camping. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code states that all rights regarding wild camping do not extend to including a motor vehicle. We advise our customers to book campsites in advance of travel. There are many beautiful campsites in Scotland. If this is not possible and you find yourself informally camping, please consider that you are relying on the goodwill of the land owner, and if you can see other vehicles nearby, then this goodwill might be challenged. Scotland has an increasing number of tourists. Whilst this is welcome, there is an impact on the environment and residents. We can only ask that you always consider your surroundings and leave your overnight spot as you found it. This means taking ALL litter away with you. If you need the loo then make sure you are at least 30ft away from any water source and bury all No. 2’s.
