The Big Sky Campers Guide to the Best Dog Friendly Campsites Scotland
GG & Belles is probably the creme de la creme of dog friendly campsites in Scotland. The owners are dog crazy and this is reflected in the design of the campsite. Each of the glamping spaces has its own secure, fenced garden and there are fenced camping pitches available for anxious or reactive dogs. It even has its own dog park for hire, complete with tunnels, tyres and a sandpit! This completely pet friendly campsite is set in 38 acres of land just outside of Blairgowrie in Perthshire with plenty of choices for walks. This is a seriously popular campsite so make sure to book. It is located at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains with stunning views, about 1.5 hours drive from our base just outside of Edinburgh so we often recommend this to our customers as a first night or last night stay.
You will find Cobleland Campsite in the Trossachs National Park. Trossachs National Park is home to Loch Lomond, the largest loch in Scotland and the largest lake in Britain. The site setting is idyllic and surrounded by trees with river walks. With its proximity to outdoor pursuits, serene atmosphere and great facilities, including disabled access, we’ve already included this pet friendly campsite in our list of best campsites in Scotland. Your dog will be very happy at this dog friendly campsite and will certainly enjoy the woodland or riverside walks.
Dogs are very welcome at this campsite set directly on the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond. Cashel Campsite is found on the east side of the Loch with access to the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and direct access to the loch. As well as forest and lochside walks, if your dog is fit enough, you can make a bid for the summit of Ben Lomond together. We advise dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead as you head to the summit as the potential to chase a hare or deer is very real and the landscape can make finding them quite a challenge.
Loch Ness is the stunning backdrop for the dog friendly Loch Ness Shores campsite at Foyers. You’ll find it on the peaceful south shore of famous Loch Ness near the village of Foyers. This is a perfect spot if you fancy your chances at spotting Nessie with your faithful friend. There is a designated dog walk and in some places there is access to the shore of the Loch. The spectacular walk to the Falls of Foyers is also possible and worth it for the stunning views. It is a remote, peaceful spot but the village of Foyers is closeby so you can nip into the village for messages or climb up the hill for a pint and a bar supper at the nearby Craigdarroch Hotel. The hotel has a policy of welcoming dogs but they do ask that the dog is clean!
If you are doing the North Coast 500 then you will have a chance to spend a night at the Halladale Inn Campsite. Right next door to the camping pitches and touring pods you will find a licensed and dog friendly cafe and bistro, open 7 days a week. Also on site is a well stocked shop and off licence which is open from 9am until the restaurant closes at the end of the evening.
On the west coast side of the NC 500, and with amazing views of Skye is Applecross campsite. This is another dog friendly site that is a favourite with our customers. This site has recently received an award for its environmental management of the non camping spaces where wild flowers are left to grow to encourage wildlife. Red deer quite often come down to the campsite and have a nose at the humans. So keep an eye on your dog who may find this a bit too exciting! Dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times on the site and there are a maximum of 2 dogs per pitch.
Ideally located for anyone setting off from Edinburgh or Glasgow, the West Highland Way Campsite is a gorgeous campsite in a woodland setting. There is a choice of woodland or more open pitches, and of grass or hardstanding with electric hook ups. This is a very dog friendly campsite and you will find water bowls dotted around the site. It is ideally placed for walking, being right on the West Highland Way. There is a relaxed atmosphere and BBQs and campfires are permitted. There is also a dog friendly shepherd’s hut available for hire. The campsite is open all year round.
Responsible tourism when travelling with dogs in Scotland
We are dog lovers ourselves and welcome dogs in most of our campervans for hire. We do remind our customers to make sure their dogs don’t run wild in the hills. Often croft land isn’t fenced and sheep and cattle can appear as if from nowhere! Apart from the risk to animals, dog rescue in the wilds of Scotland can be time consuming. One tip we were given was to fry bacon near where the dog was last seen as the scent carries and hopefully draws them back! As a responsible tourism company we do encourage our customers to be vigilant and prepared and, of course, please pick up their poop.
If you are thinking about a dog friendly camping holiday in Scotland, Big Sky Campers are here to help. Most of our campervans are dog friendly and we don’t charge extra for bringing your dog with you. We are also happy to help you choose a dog friendly itinerary. We provide doggie camping accessories free of charge. You can see all the details of our dog policy and dog accessories on our dog policy page. If you have any questions, or simply want to hire one of our dog friendly campervans, please get in touch via our website. You can also book directly on our site.
